Mench caps Jays' comeback win over Street, Oakland

08/05/2008 -
Toronto, ON (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Kevin Mench hit a game-winning single in the
ninth inning to send Toronto past Oakland, 4-3, in the second installment of a
four-game set from Rogers Centre.
Rod Barajas had two hits, a run scored and an RBI for the Blue Jays, who have
won three of four including the first two games of this series. Adam Lind and
Marco Scutaro also added runs driven in.
Jesse Carlson (4-1) earned the win in relief, holding the A's hitless over
two-thirds of an inning. Starter Scott Richmond allowed seven hits and three
runs over 5 2/3 innings.
Carlos Gonzalez finished 4-for-4 with a pair of runs scored for the Athletics,
who have lost a season-high eight in a row and 11 of their last 12. Bobby
Crosby drove in two runs and Mark Ellis knocked in the other.
Huston Street (2-5) took the loss and the blown save, charged with three hits
and two runs while recording two outs in the ninth. Greg Smith shone in the
start despite a no-decision for Oakland, scattering four hits and two runs
over six full frames.
"Even though this is a horrible outing, and poor timing as far as everything
that's going on with the team in this streak, we've got to put it behind us,"
said Street. "I've got to forget about it myself."
Street allowed a leadoff single to Alex Rios in the ninth, and Barajas drilled
a double to the gap in left-center which tied the game. Lind drew an
intentional walk and Rolen's groundout moved pinch-runner Brad Wilkerson to
third.
That set the stage for Mench, who drilled a ball deep into the outfield to
bring in the deciding run.
"I'm usually looking for something good to hit," Mench said of his approach to
the at-bat. "He's not gonna throw anything in the dirt or a wild pitch. I got
a good one to hit."
Oakland got on the board in the second, as Gonzalez doubled with one out and
Ellis singled him in.
Toronto countered in the home half as Barajas singled to left and scored when
Lind tripled off the wall in center.
Crosby's two-run triple in the fourth pushed the A's on top. Gonzalez singled
with one out and Jack Hannahan walked two batters later before Crosby narrowly
missed his second home run in as many games.
Scutaro's RBI single in the fifth brought the Jays within a run, then Jays
reliever John Parrish got out of trouble in the seventh by inducing an inning-
ending double play from Kurt Suzuki.
The A's loaded the bases with none out in the eighth, but Ellis lined into a
double play to shortstop John McDonald and Hannahan grounded to third to end
the threat.
